Golf program tees off at local school
A student from Dr. S.J. Phillips Public School takes a mighty swing as part of the Callaway Golf for Kids program. Students were instructed on how to chip and putt as the first part of the initiative, which will be sponsored by Durham College in 30 local schools.

It wasn’t quite Augusta National but it was a pretty good start.
The gym at Dr. S.J. Phillips Public School stood in for a real golf course recently, as the students there took part in the official launch of the Callaway Golf for Kids junior golf program in Durham Region.
Handed putters and pitching wedges, the students dutifully took their hacks while being supervised by instructors from the Golf Association of Ontario (GAO). Durham College will be covering the cost of the program for 30 new schools over the area, which aims to introduce the game to students across the region.
“With the support of Durham College, we are thrilled to say that thousands of children in Durham Region will now have the chance to participate in these programs and enjoy an exciting introduction to golf in a learning environment,” says Mike Kelly, director of sports development for GAO.
The program is the first step in giving kids a positive experience with the sport, while encouraging children to lead healthy and active lives, says a release.
“On behalf of Durham College, I am very pleased to be working with the GAO on this worthwhile initiative,” says Don Lovisa, president of Durham College. “Through our partnership, we will be able to bring the game of golf to a whole new audience while creating a positive impact on the community as a whole. Perhaps some of the young golfers here today will become future members of the Durham College varsity golf team!”
Local schools will receive a learning resource developed in partnership with Physical Health and Educations Associations of Canada (PHE Canada) along with a full set of kid-sized golf equipment, notes the release.
“When you play golf…it’s very healthy for you,” says Dave Mills, executive director of GAO. “You’re walking for three-and-a-half hours outdoors.”
Thus far, 500 schools and 15,000 students a year are influenced by the program, he adds.
Another big part of the game is the honesty and integrity players are supposed to have while playing, life skills young people can take away from golf, says Mills.

Perhaps more important is continuing to grow golf's base with the younger generation. “Growing the game is part of this,” Mills explains. “The reality is, if you're not getting kids in the game your participation levels will go down.
