Storms over; back to the heat

The Gordon Jewish Community Center near Bellevue was struck by lightning and closed at 5 p.m. A news release said it was uncertain if the center would reopen today.

The steeple of the Stateland Baptist Church in Hermitage was also struck by lightning, which left some fire damage. Ricky Taylor, a Nashville Fire Department spokesman, said the damage was minimal and the church should be able to have services on Sunday.

Two inches of rainfall was reported at the Nashville airport over a six-hour period. There were reports of 60 mph winds in Rutherford County.

Two-inch hail fell on McCabe Golf Course in west Nashville, said meteorologist John Cohen of the National Weather Service in Nashville.

More than 6,000 NES customers were without power at the peak of the storm; about 2,300 were still in the dark at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The rain brought a brief break in the heat wave, but temperatures will be back in the 90s for the next several days, Cohen said.

The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the following areas: Davidson, east central Cheatham, extreme north central Williamson, southern Sumner, Wilson and western Trousdale counties until 1 p.m.

This storm is capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds of up to 60 mph.

“We’ve got thunderstorms moving through the Nashville area, and we’ve had reports of up to 1 inch in diameter in the area,” said meteorologist Bobby Boyd of the National Weather Service.

“The strongest activity is moving into the Wilson County area, and he strongest storms are going to be east of Cookville and north of Crossville in the plateau area.”

“There is a severe thunderstorm watch out that covers a large area, including parts of North Caroline, Alabama and Georgia, that will last til 7 p.m. central time.” “I think what we’re looking at is a chance for an isolated severe storm or two this afternoon in Middle Tennessee,” said meteorologist Bobby Boyd with the Nashville office.
“We can’t rule out isolated storms during the afternoon. Damaging winds, large hail and frequent lightning are the main threats. These storms will be isolated, not widespread.

All-star soccer teams to clash Saturday at USN | High School Sports

Tennessee will be looking for revenge in Saturday’s 2 p.m. all-star soccer game against Kentucky at the University School of Nashville river campus.

Kentucky pounded Tennessee 6-1 last year.
