Money Help: Saying 'no' is essential component toward financial freedom
If you want to achieve financial freedom, let me introduce you to something extremely helpful — the word no.
It is easy to use that word with others at times, but it can be difficult to deny ourselves and those we love.
In many cases, it is very easy for me to say no to my children. “Dad, can I go play in the street with firecrackers?” and “Can I try out my new parachute by jumping off the roof?” are readily answered with a strong “No.”
It is not always easy, though.
When your child really wants to participate in a special event or expensive camp, the right response might be no, but it can be so hard to say it.
This might sound cruel to some parents, but sometimes the right answer is to say no to children. A great question I ask when making financial decisions is “Will this decision force me to say no to something more important in the future?” If it does not jeopardize future plans, then I am much more likely to spend the money.
Unfortunately, I have learned some lessons the expensive way. For example, my daughter fell in love with Webkinz three years ago. For those who do not know, a Webkinz is a genius idea — a stuffed animal that has an Internet code attached to it. If you enter the code into a specific website, the stuffed animal “comes to life” online, and you can feed it, play with it, design a room for it and even talk to other stuffed animals. It is basically a Facebook page for stuffed animals. My daughter received her first Webkinz from her grandmother. It spiraled out of control from there. By the end of the madness, there were at least 25 of these stuffed animals in the house. There was no way she could play with every one of these toys. Even more, at a cost of about $15 each, this represented $375 of spending for toys that she does not even play with any more. I don’t regret spending the money on the first few, but imagine where else that money could have been employed. It could have been applied toward her first car fund, college fund or another fun item.
Ultimately, I have realized that saying no now has allowed me to say yes to a lot more things in the future. For example, when I started telling my daughter no to yet another Webkinz, I began to tell her that I was really telling her yes to a paid-for college education.
As little fun as it is, I must admit that using the word no has been an essential component of our journey toward financial freedom.
