Sustainable Packaging Brief: Wal-Mart, Safeway, Dr. Pepper
The five largest grocery chains in Canada will require their suppliers to shift to PET for thermoformed clamshell packaging, reports Waste & Recycling News . The move – aimed at increasing recycling and simplifying the product stream – is being championed by The Retail Council of Canadian Grocers. Grocery store chains involved in the project include Wal-Mart Canada Corp., Loblaws Inc., Safeway Canada, Metro and Sobeys.
On a smaller scale, but with a more radical anti-packaging aim than the Canadian shops above, a planned grocery store in Austin, Texas, has announced that when it opens it will eliminate all packaging from its store , reports Treehugger . In.gredients ( pictured ) also plans to be zero-waste, and, like Austin-based Whole Foods, will focus on local and organic produce. Products will be sold in bulk-buy containers only, with customers encouraged to bring in their own containers to transport the goods home.

Sustainable consulting firm EarthShift has launched a simplified life cycle assessment tool that evaluates the environmental impacts of packaging. PackageSmart enables packaging engineers and designers to integrate environmental assessment early into the design process when leverage is high and the cost of change is still low, EarthShift says. A free two week trial is now available through the EarthShift website.
Greenstar Recycling and Vadxx Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture to convert recovered plastic into synthetic crude oil. Vadxx manufactures synthetic crude oil and natural gas by using raw materials consisting of petroleum-based plastics in a process called thermal depolymerization. Greenstar and Vadxx expect that the joint venture will begin producing crude oil in mid-2012 in Ohio.
Renewable chemicals firm Gevo Inc . and its customer, plastics and chemicals producer Toray , have announced that they have successfully produced fully renewable, bio-based PET. The companies now plan to establish a commercial-scale manufacturing process.

in the world of marketing/advertising there is something called a target market. a target market is a niche group of people that the product will sell best to. now there are lots of markets worth pursuing but it is foolish and expensive to try to market to every market with just one product. this is because everyone has different tastes, wants, and needs.
in comes dr pepper (dr). dr has a product called ‘diet dr. pepper’. what they found in regards to sales and research is that men do not like the word ‘diet’ and so they do not drink it. Diet Dr pepper is however popular with women. The market is becoming more and more health conscious and men are becoming a significant portion of the low-cal soft drink market which is very big and is growing very fast. now the best way to get a share of this market is to introduce a product that will appeal to this emerging market. so what dr did was introduce a low-cal pop that will appeal to this market. now what is the best way to do this? what we marketers do is lots and lots of research. we find out what this market thinks, how much money they make, their life stage, likes/dislikes etc. now what was found is that the best way to appeal to men is to name the drink after a number. naming it after a number makes it gender neutral and rids the drink of its ‘feminine’ personality. this has already proved successful with the introduction of coke zero. now b) because dr wants to win the hearts of men, they will need to communicate messages that are popular with men that agree with its brand personality (ruggedness and excitement). what this led to is showing men in the outdoors, doing exciting things, and referencing action movies which are statistically more popular among men.
now what im trying to get at here is that advertisments dont tell you what to think, they take advantage of what you are already thinking of. when consumer patterns of behaviour change, so does the advertisement. why? because it is more expensive to try to change consumer behaviour than it is to design products centered around current consumer behaviours. if the dr target market was not aroused by the commercial, they would not spend the money to air it.
