John DiStaso's Granite Status: Romney sets up shop and staffs up in NH

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: SETTING UP SHOP; STAFFING UP. Now that Mitt Romney is an announced candidate, his campaign has set up shop in the same Manchester office it used last time, at 361 Elm St., next to Van Otis chocolate.

Last year, the site was Republican Ovide Lamontagne's U.S. Senate campaign office.

Romney has also added four field representatives, bringing his New Hampshire staff to eight (nine when counting regional communications director Ryan Williams).

The new field staffers are:

- Matt Moroney of Haverhill, Mass., a 2009 University of New Hampshire graduate who was on Rich Ashooh's congressional campaign staff and managed Republican Peter Angerhofer's District 21 state Senate campaign in 2010. He also volunteered as a college student on Romney's 2008 campaign.

- Megan Stone of Hollis, founder of the Keene State College Students for Mitt and a volunteer coordinator on Jim Bender's U.S. Senate campaign during 2010 primary.

- Danielle Winters of Hale's Location served as Carroll County coordinator for U.S. Rep. Frank Guinta's 2010 campaign and has worked on several local races.

- Caitlyn Woodward of Newport in 2010 was a field representative for Bill Binnie's U.S. Senate campaign and then U.S. Rep. Charlie Bass's campaign.

Previously announced staffers are state director Jason McBride, deputy directors Jill Neunaber and Danny O'Driscoll as well as consultant Jim Merrill.

Romney's first post-formal announcement campaign fundraising mailer hit mailboxes this week. The glossy piece begins by noting that he announced his candidacy in Stratham and focuses on his “Believe in America” and leadership themes.

TUESDAY UPDATE: SANTORUM TO PLEDGE. TUESDAY UPDATE: SANTORUM TO PLEDGE. One of the nation's most well-known anti-tax advocates will join recently announced GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum in Manchester on Wednesday.

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist is slated to be on hand to witness Santorum sign ATR's “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” at Central Paper, 350 Gay St., Manchester, at 2:30 p.m.

Santorum will then tour the facility and talk tax and regulatory challenges facing small businesses.

In Sunday’s Automobiles section, Cheryl Jensen reviews the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country , which Chrysler historically has positioned as the choice of the luxury-minded minivan buyer. As Ms. Jensen notes, however, the automaker’s upmarket aspirations have not always translated to the final product.

Yet the 2011 model, which Chrysler says has been “significantly re-engineered,” offers its share of niceties:

For those of us living in colder climates, heated front seats are hard to beat. But the Town & Country test van topped that with a heated steering wheel and heated second-row seats, which could result in arguments among siblings about who will be relegated to the frozen reaches of the third row.

The interior appointments of Chrysler’s previous vans didn’t measure up to the competition, but that has finally changed. The test model’s cabin was every bit as handsome and practical as those of the Odyssey or Toyota Sienna.
