Ransom Township mulls bids for road work

For line painting of township roads: Alpha Space Control in Chambersburg, $17,266); Interstate Road Management in Hazleton, $15,112.20.

For paving of Ledge Drive: Pennsy Supply in Harrisburg, $166,055; Locust Ridge in Pocono Lake, $298,617.50; Hanson Aggregates in Bloomsburg, $294,652.

For cracked sealing work on most township roads: E.J. Breneman in West Lawn, $111,750; Axtell’s Inc. in Jermyn, $60,000; Asphalt Maintenance Solutions in Newville, $57,850; Vestal Asphalt in Vestal, N.Y., $66,850.

For microsurfacing of Milwaukee Road and Hickory Lane: E.J. Breneman, $128,924; Vestal Asphalt, $94,010; Suit-Kote in Hallstead, $79,520.

Road supervisor David Bird made a motion to accept all of the bids for review.

Dennis Macheska Bird also announced that Wentz Construction would be awarded the bid to complete pipe and drainage work on Sekol Avenue.

Early-1900s: According to state records, mining began.

1939 : “With the construction of the Shasta Dam in California about to start and his company holding the contract to supply cement, [Henry J] Kaiser [2, 5] took a risk and built a cement manufacturing plant at the Cupertino quarry for supplying the cementitious-materials required for the project.”[1] This is the date given for “year founded” of Hanson Aggregates West, known first as Kaiser Cement Corp. and Kaiser Materials Corp. May 8, 1939 : Use permit for the cement plant was first issued by the county.

1940s : The Kaiser Wastewater Treatment Facility was built in the 1940’s, and although it is operated by Kaiser Cement Corporation [circa 1994], it is located on adjacent property owned by Kaiser Aluminum Corporation.

June 1950 and May 1955 : Cement plant use permit modified to add rotary kilns to the operations.

1975 : California adopted the Surface Mine and Reclamation Act, which mandates that all active surface mines have reclamation plans approved by the local jurisdiction.

December 5, 1977 : Cement plant use permit modified for modernization

March 7, 1985 : The County of Santa Clara approved the reclamation plan for the Permanente Quarry, valid for a period of 25 years.

1987 : Hanson Building Materials America acquired the site and the company.

1994 : Order 94-038

1999 : name changed to Hanson Permanente Cement (Parent: Hanson Aggregates West at some point : the cement plant and quarry were inspected by State Office of Mine Reclamation and found in violation.

1999: State Water Board issued an order: Although Lehigh’s predecessor Hanson complied with Remedial and Long Term measures specified in CAO [Cleanup and Abatement Order] 99-018 , a long term creek restoration plan must still be completed.
