Actress Elaine Stewart Dead At Age 81

In films, such as “The Bad and the Beautiful” which co-starred Kirk Douglas and Lana Tuner, she was able to capture the audience’s attention with small roles and her voluptuous assets. The seductress from the silver screen did almost 20 movies in the ‘50s and inspired ‘60s icons, such as Jayne Mansfield, to use their sexuality to become major movie stars. It was the one minute scene in “The Bad and the Beautiful” when a barefoot stunner came down the stairs carrying a drink in a tight evening gown that many remember Stewart from. However, other films she made tremendous and popular appearances in include “The Adventures of Hajji Baba,” “Young Bess,” “Night Passage” and “The Tattered Dress.” It was in “The Tattered Dress” that many finally realized she was a lot more than just a beauty, but extremely talented in as well. MGM Studios had long been a glamour-filled studio system after having such icons as Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford. Stewart came at a time when the studio was using more sex-appeal than glamour, since the nation was in transition and needed more on-screen stimulation to bring moviegoers back to the theaters. Stewart was much like Esther Williams, an answer for a failing mega studio, and she embraced the roles as femme fatales like few other stars could. Her often provocative image on screen fell short in public, as Stewart though always beautiful, never bought into the Hollywood hype that PR flacks at MGM and in Tinseltown were trying to convey to fans. She never forgot her humble roots in Montclair, N.J. and would often visit, until her health failed. She is still considered the town’s favorite daughter, even though she lived here in the hills. As a teenage girl, Elaine signed a contract with a major modeling agency and changed her name. Hal Wallis then came calling from Hollywood and offered her a salary of $200 per week to play a nurse in “Sailor Beware,” starring Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. She also appeared in many television shows after her film career slowed down by the early 1960s.

8-Year-Old Fatally Injured in Beverly, New Jersey Car Accident

A fatal Beverly, New Jersey auto accident claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl on June 5, 2011.

On Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m., Jazmine Nicole Perry was riding in the rear of a vehicle driven by her aunt, Stephanie Schwarz, 25, of Burlington City.

Perry and Schwarz were heading to pick up some snacks from the Pathmark supermarket on Route 130. As they were driving along Warren Street, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a telephone pole.

Perry suffered fatal injuries in the devastating accident.

Schwarz suffered multiple injuries and is currently in serious condition at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
