Former fast food outlet Hot n' Now becomes collaborative art gallery in Holland

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP — Would you like art with those fries?

People won’t get french fries these days at the former Hot ‘n Now burger building at 144 Douglas Ave., but they now can buy the artwork of the Studio Rico Oeste art collaborative there.

The old fast-food outlet and adjoining industrial building have become the home for Redemption gallery, a collaborative that features the works of six area artists.

Repurposed and recycled materials

“Most of our art is created from repurposed and recycled materials that we search out, discover or just turn up,” said Studio Rico Oeste founder Rick Weese.

“We share the rent and the work and can be masters of our own stuff. What’s good about having our own gallery is we don’t have to pay someone else a gallery commission, which along the Lakeshore can run 50 percent or more.

“Running your own gallery means the artists make a fair price on their art and the buyers get more art for their money.”

In addition to the founding members, Redemption also allows other artists to show and sell their work for a 30 percent commission.

A mixed collection

The new gallery offers a mixed collection of art, crafts art and collectables ranging from kinetic metal sculptures that move in the wind to hand-made jewelry to original hand-cut stencil paintings as well as found items, such as Bicentennial license plates.

The gallery opened this month. Its operating hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays through Sundays with everyone pitching in time to staff the gallery and do sales.

Weese, 47, is a full-time artist who started as a commercial artist in his hometown of Traverse City. Weese, who also uses the name Rico Oeste as an alter ego, has lived in Holland since 1991 and has created functional high concept art from floating stairways to polished concrete coffee tables through his commercial company Gyxo.

“That all ebbed away when the building industry took a hit in 2009,” he said. “Now I’ve transitioned into metal sculpture and over the past few years have found kindred spirits in art to create Redemption.”

His metal kinetic art pieces displayed around the parking lot of the old Hot ‘n Now include the “Big Red Face” for $595 to “Junque in Space,” a welded globe made from industrial components that just sold for $1,495.
