Geoff Calkins: Timing bad, but Grizzlies will survive a lockout
Greg Campbell, the Grizzlies president of business operations, took the call on the way back from a lunch meeting with a couple of vice presidents at First Tennessee.
"They couldn't stop talking about the playoffs," he said. "It's like that everywhere we go."
What a run! What a season!
What a lousy time for it to come to an end.
Barring a miracle -- a dramatic breakthrough in negotiations that nobody expects -- the NBA owners will lock out the players starting at midnight Thursday.
I think I speak for Memphians everywhere when I say: Did it have to be this year?
Couldn't it have been 2008-2009, when the Grizzlies won 24 games? Or either of the seasons before that, when they won 22?
Couldn't it have been any of the Mike Fratello years? Did it have to be now?
Nobody in the city would have missed a year without Darko Milicic, Casey Jacobsen or Hasheem Thabeet.
But a year without Zach Randolph, Tony Allen and Marc Gasol?
Say it ain't so.
But it apparently is so, and will remain so, almost certainly for the foreseeable future, and possibly for the entire year.
NBA Commissioner David Stern briefed the owners Tuesday on the progress of talks with the players, although "progress" may not be the right word.
The owners want to dramatically roll back player salaries and install a meaningful salary cap. The players are willing to trim salaries but want nothing to do with a salary cap.
If this were any other year, Grizzlies fans would be wise to pull for the owners, to hope that Stern and the rest do whatever is required to install a financial system in which small market teams can flourish or at least compete.
But this year? Of all years? Can't this franchise catch a break?
The temptation is to compare the Grizzlies to baseball's Montreal Expos. You may recall that team's story of woe.
After years of struggle, the Expos finally put it all together in 1994. Led by Pedro Martinez, Larry Walker and Moises Alou, they were on pace to win 105 games when the season was ended by a strike.
The franchise never recovered. The Expos are now the Washington Nationals.
More than one Grizzlies fan has E-mailed me asking if the same thing could happen here.
It's unlikely, honestly, for a whole bunch of reasons. Chief among them: That Expos team had a roster full of young, gifted players who weren't signed long term.
