Summer events
These are some of the summer activities scheduled in Astoria as the coastal city continues to celebrate its bicentennial:
Music, dance and food from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland will be highlighted June 17-19 at the Midsummer Scandinavian Festival at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. Continuing through June 26, the Astoria Music Festival will welcome musicians from its European sister city of Walldorf, Germany.
The North Coast Symphonic Band will perform an Independence Day concert at the Liberty Theater on July 3. The following evening, a fireworks display will illuminate the harbor over the Columbia River.
On July 15, the David Thompson Canoeing Brigade will arrive in Astoria after paddling the full length of the Columbia River. This commemorates an 1811 voyage by Thompson, a British-Canadian fur trader and explorer, who led a party of 10 downriver from the Canadian Rockies. Their arrival will be heralded the following night with a Liberty Theater concert by Tiller’s Folly, a Celtic band from Canada.
The Astoria Regatta, a five-day festival held annually since 1894, is scheduled Aug. 10-14. British Lord John Jacob Astor VIII — a direct descendant of Astoria’s founding father — will serve as an “admiral” at Aug. 13’s Grand Land Parade. A concert by country singer Reba McEntire will put the finishing touch on the event Aug. 14 at Warrenton’s Camp Rilea.
Folk artist Judy Collins will perform two shows at the Liberty Theater during Super Homecoming weekend, Sept.
