Demand Media's eHow Slammed Again by Google's Panda 2
I believe that Google's ( GOOG ) latest algorithm update, targeting low quality content sites, has impacted Demand Media ( DMD ) for the second time in 3 months.
On April 14, I broke the news that the second Google update targeting content farms, dubbed Panda 2 by the search engine community, had unexpectedly impacted eHow search rankings. Since then, the stock has dropped precipitously - but things have only gotten worse.
On June 9, Google's search engine spam chief Matt Cutts announced that Panda 2.2,was coming soon , and that it would target sites that copy content from other sites. That day appears to have come on June 17.

Feb 19 - 1,680 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.06 (Pre Panda 1) Mar 02 - 1,892 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.05 (Post Panda 1) Apr 10 - 1,996 top 10 hits at an average rank of 2.95 (Pre Panda 2) Apr 16 - 1,341 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.39 (Post Panda 2) Jun 17 - 1,216 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.40 (Pre Panda 2.2) Jun 18 - 924 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.56 (Post Panda 2.2 day 1) Jun 19 - 924 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.55 (Post Panda 2.2 day 2) Jun 20 - 916 top 10 hits at an average rank of 3.56 (Post Panda 2.2 day 3)You can draw your own conclusions, but in my opinion things aren't looking good for eHow. Our credit card site, NerdWallet, saw a 20% increase in search traffic in the exact same time frame as Panda 2.2, which increases my conviction that an update happened.
The Goldman Sachs Upgrade Makes No Sense.
Finally, I feel compelled to address the head-scratching upgrade by Goldman Sachs analyst Jordan Monahan, one week ago.
The timing is interesting - it comes ahead of the 180 day IPO lockup expiration in July, at which time about 72 million shares of stock should become available for sale by previously restricted shareholders. Interestingly, a few million of these shares are held by Goldman Sachs ( see pages 47 and 183 ). However, since it is illegal for sell side analysts to upgrade stocks simply because their firm owns ~$100 million worth of said stock, this is clearly just a coincidence.

We’ve all been there – you have a great idea for a website, but all the good names are already taken. Don’t despair, there a lot of free (or almost free) tools that can help you find great memorable domain name without breaking the bank.
1. Nameboy
Nameboy.Com is a free domain suggestions tool (others include ShoutDomains.com, NameTumbler.com, etc.) that uses keyword algorithms to automatically create domain names and check them for availability. Since all domains are generated by machine, most of the suggestions are outright unusable; however you can get some ideas by using NameBoy. Free is free.
2. PickyDomains.com
Unlike Nameboy, PickyDomains.com is powered by humans (44,000+ registered contributors and counting). This service isn’t free, and it is fairly inexpensive ($50) and you pay only if you decide to register one of the suggested domains. If you don’t like anything, you don’t pay anything. Risk-free crowdsourcing model in action. If you are good with words, you might want to try it on the contributor side, as 40%-60% of that client fee is paid to the contributor who made the winning suggestion via PayPal.
3. Expired Domains
There are a number of services in this niche both free and paid, easily found via search engine (‘expired domains’, ‘expired domain lists’). Expired domains are just what their name suggests – domains that have been previously registered and had since become available. Expired domains aren’t all bad; for instance, I’ve recently purchased UnPrice.com for a discount site, which is perfect for my purposes, but there is a lot of digging to be done. The advantages and disadvantages of buying expired domain are the same – you inherit all the history, which could be free type-in traffic and existing backlinks, but it also could be ban from search engines for violations.
4. US Government
If you need domain name for commercial purposes, it might be worthwhile to see if related trademarks have already been registered. Uncle Sam gives you an antiquated but free online service for that. You can also file for trademark registration at http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifn online, but a brief visit to that site will make it clear why most companies rely on patent lawyers for that.
