Lots to see and do at Hobby Expo

A feast of sights, smells, sounds and tastes greeted visitors to the Paris Hobby Expo on the weekend.

From the roar of a modified tractor pull to the tantalizing scents of barbecue, there was something for every age and interest, including antique tractor competitions and a heavy horse pull.

More than a dozen barbecue cook-off competitors in the Canadian Pork Championship were up late Friday and up early Saturday to tend to numerous smokers that emitted already mouth-watering aromas.

"The pork shoulder has been on since 10 p.m. last night," said Daryl Maybanks, of Guelph.

"You can't rush a good barbecue," added his wife, Vicki Weaver.

The couple – members of the Q'n Canucks team – tended to four smokers containing an assortment of barbecue goodies.

Maybanks has been competing for about six years and his team travels to barbecue contests across Canada and the U.S.

"You get to meet lots of great people," Weaver said. At the recent Roc City Rib Fest in Rochester, NY, the Q'n Canucks captured a 7th place finish among a field of 145 teams.

Maybanks, like most competitors, keeps a tight lid on his barbecue secrets, but he did allow that a lot of people "spritz" their barbecuing vittles with applesauce to add moisture.

"It's already got flavour," he said.

Local award-winning barbecue veterans – The Swinefellows – were also on hand, smokin' up a storm.

"This is a friendly competition," said Bob Dorschner, of Brantford, a grill master with 17 years experience on the competitive barbecue circuit, adding that there's no fooling around at some of the high-profile American contests where livelihoods can be at stake.

"Some people do this for a living," he said.

Dorschner's secret to barbecue success? He won't reveal it, of course. Except for the obvious, saying that low and slow is the way to go.

Across from the grandstand, the fairgrounds were abuzz with a working antique portable saw mill and an army of antique tractors, including the prize rides of about two dozen members of the Burford Tractor Club.

Don Martin, of Burford, rode in on his 1956 Ferguson 40. The Detroit-made machine boasted then-factory options such as power steering. He has spruced up the old reliable with new tires, rims and paint job.

Martin said he has several other tractors that he'd "like to freshen up yet" in his spare time.

Sunday's events also included an even older demonstration of farm life from days of yore, with an impressive display of the brute force and majesty of the heavy horse/draft horse pull.
