William Spyropoulos School’s former Principal Chris Arlis said “My mother was from Evia and my husband is from Chios. Listening to this music is enriching.” St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine Church of Flushing Protopresbyter Paul Palesty was also in attendance. The audience was filled with nostalgia and serenity by the music of Theodorakis, Hatzidakis, Loizos, and Kilaidonis. Maninakis concluded this trip into the Greek soul with Pantelis Thalassinos’ “Ta Smyrneika Tragoudia”. “Rebetiko originated in the music of the larger Greek cities, most of them coastal, in today’s Greece and Asia Minor,” Maninakis said. “In the wake of the population exchange of 1923, huge numbers of refugees settled. They brought with them both European and Anatolian musical elements and instruments. These Greek musicians from Asia Minor were highly competent, educated musicians. The 1930s -1950s was the classical period of Rebetika, fusing Asia Minor, Greek folk and Byzantine music. Manos Hatzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis were the prime movers of the “Éntekhno” song. “Éntekhno” (art song) combines Greek folk rhythms and melodies. Its lyrical themes are often political or based on the work of famous Greek poets. Modern Laïká or Laïko-pop is currently Greece's mainstream music in today’s nightlife. “My mother was born in Tseme (Asia Minor coast opposite Chios) and my father is from Crete,” Maninakis said. “Smyrna, prior to the 1922 holocaust, was a preeminent international center of business in Europe. Its beauty and intellectual centers were celebrated throughout the world. My parents would sing songs until the early hours of the day. Rebetika (Greek blues) is not about jail and misery. They are more of a sing-along.

Chinese Restaurant – The Ubiquitous Toilet ... - Serenity in China

Went out tonight for Chinese food with friends and left my camera and lenses inside the air conditioning to get a break from the heat and humidity.

While we all were getting settled at the table I snapped this picture with my iTouch camera.

The ubiquitous roll of toilet paper (used as napkins in Asia) sat front and center.

In the background, someone’s ‘sticker feng shui ‘ had been shotgunned all over the wall, lol.

The best part of dinner was when I shot some pics of the dishes as they arrived and the hostess and server were ooing and ahhhing over them, lol. I thought of my Canon DSLR and Canon ES-71II 50mm lens aka my ‘food lens’ and the contrast in quality of picture . . . I think if I showed them shots I’ve taken of their food in the past from my GOOD camera their heads might explode . . .lol.

Dinner was YUMMY! However, at one point we were all glued to the TV as flooding video was shown from Beijing–nutbar!

As I write this I’m still feeling full from the good food which I will definitely miss once I’m back in Canada.
