Scary summer: JJ Abrams takes an eerie nostalgia trip in 'Super 8'
Lots of kids in the 1960s and ’70s watched Hammer movies, and Universal monster movies, and Steven Spielberg's Jaws and C lose Encounters of the Third Kind …built Aurora models of Frankenstein and Spider-Man…read those black-and-white Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella horror-comics magazines…and made little backyard epics shot on Super 8 home-movie cameras.And one kid like that grew up to become Jeffrey Jacob "J.J." Abrams—who, in a career that includes such genre projects as the 2009 Star Trek movie reboot, the science-fiction TV series “Lost” and “Fringe” and the comic-book-like spy-girl TV series “Alias,” now comes full circle with Super 8 , a film about a bunch of kids in 1979 who make models, read Famous Monsters of Filmland , and are shooting a Super 8 zombie movie when an all-too-real alien invades their small town.
Abrams, the son of two TV/film producers, was raised in the New York City area and Los Angeles, and educated at Sarah Lawrence College. After getting his screenwriting start co-writing the 1990 comedy Taking Care of Business , he did solo scripts for Regarding Henry , starring Harrison Ford, and Forever Young , with Mel Gibson, then co-scripted director Michael Bay's Armageddon before scoring a cultural touchstone with The WB's four-season series “Felicity,” about a New York City co-ed.
Abrams then formed the production company Bad Robot and launched “Alias” and other series, made his feature directorial debut in 2006 with Mission: Impossible III and became increasingly involved as producer. But he never forgot his roots—which had a little richer soil than most, not just because of his parents' occupations but because as a teen he got to know Steven Spielberg when the vaunted director hired the young Super 8 filmmaker to repair some of Spielberg's own, older-format 8mm movies.
Before its scheduled June 10 release by Paramount, Super 8 has gotten almost universally positive reviews from genre websites like Bloody-Disgusting.com and DreadCentral.com, and from film-buff sites like ComingSoon.net. As writer-director Abrams' awaits mainstream critics' verdicts, he spoke to us by phone from Singapore, where he's on a publicity leg for his film, which stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Ron Eldard and newcomer Joel Courtney.
Film Journal International: Were you anything like your movie's young filmmaker, Charles [played by Riley Griffiths], when you were growing up? Was there a girl you wanted to impress, as there was for him?
