Local carpenter hangs up his hammer
One of the more unusual construction projects Ted J. Donovan and his crew ever undertook involved a "cat house" on Wood's Lane at the east edge of Jacksonville.
"We built it to include heating and air conditioning," Donovan said. "The owner wanted the cats to have thier own facilities. They were indoor-outdoor cats and we installed a small door so they could come and go when they wanted."
After more than 60 years in the construction business, Donovan has hung up his hammer and nail pouch. He sat down earlier this week to reflect on his long career.
Donovan began doing carpentry work for Charles Illias, a Literberry building contractor, in 1949. Illias was an uncle of Donovan's wife, Charline, and helped raise her.
"There was a lot of carpenter work when I got started, but there wasn't too much new construction," said Donovan.
In 1954, he left Illias' firm to start his own construction business. "Business sort of came to me," he recalled. "People knew me through [Illias] and my business grew."
Donovan worked with Claude "Salty" Spradlin in the 1950s. The first house they built was in Ashland in 1954.
"A couple was getting ready to retire and they wanted a new house to be close to their daughter," Charline Donovan said.
"They changed their original plans and had us add a fireplace," Ted Donovan recalled. "It wasn't a large house-1,000 or 1,200 square feet. It probably cost $12,000 to $14,000 to build."
Donovan, who was born and raised in Yatesville, a small community southwest of Ashland, built several other houses in Ashland over the years "until I got busy here in Jacksonville."
Around 1956, Donovan built his first house in Morgan County in the 1500 block of Hardin Avenue in South Jacksonville.
"We kept busy," Donovan said. "Salty left after a few years and went back to farming near Ashland, and I hired the old crew that worked for Mr. Illias."
Work started to pick up for Donovan and his crew as more and more subdivisions sprang up in Jacksonville.
Between 1954 and 2011, Donovan constructed about 260 houses in Morgan County and the surrounding area.
Besides houses, Donovan also built commercial and public buildings such as Chapin State Bank buildings in Chapin and Concord, the Alexander firehouse, several Fanco gas stations in Jacksonville, an office building and scale house for Burrus Seed Farms near Arenzville and most of the cottages at Barton Stone Home in Jacksonville.
