It’s not an especially new idea. Newspapers have done it for years. That’s why we run a huge headline on our front page. That’s why those slick mags scream at you from the supermarket checkout line how you can lose weight, improve your sex life or find the person of your dreams. Television has simply taken it to a whole new level, or low, as the case may be. We like to watch. We’ve become a nation of voyeurs. We crave celebrity, and then delight in tearing down anyone who achieves such status. We revel in gossip, soak in the buzz, and consume every delicious morsel. Now we don’t simply need to watch. We can actually take part. We can vote for American Idol. We can post comments on stories on newspaper websites. We post on our ubiquitous Facebook pages. And fire off snarky “tweets” on our Twitter accounts. I was reminded of the swamp we so often slosh around in again last week. I guess you could call me out of the loop. Or just old. That’s what most people do. I usually have a pretty good feel for news. So I was a little perplexed when the buzz started going through the newsroom concerning a fatal car crash in Chester County and reports that it involved Ryan Dunn. Ryan Dunn was one of the stars of the ‘Jackass’ reality TV and movie series. And yes, his death turned out to be a very big deal. Thousands of people went to our website to read about the accident that took his life and view the videos of the crash scene and people reacting to his death. I had heard of “Jackass,” and I was familiar with its star, Bam Margera.
