SC legislators approve unemployment benefit cuts
South Carolina workers will have their maximum unemployment benefits slashed from 26 weeks to 20 under a measure headed to Gov. Nikki Haley's desk.
With a 93-11 vote Wednesday, the House approved cutting the benefits.
The change also means South Carolinians will lose up to 17 weeks of federal extended benefits. Combined benefits would fall from a maximum of 99 weeks to 77.
The legislation also limits unemployment benefits for people in seasonal occupations.
It also gives breaks to employers struggling to pay higher unemployment taxes as the state pays off federal jobless benefit loans.
Supporters including Haley have said the changes will help businesses and cut expenses in the unemployment system.

SC unemployment benefits would be under the gun if new bill is signed
"I have family members that are relying on unemployment," he told News 12.
He was surprised to learn of a bill in the works in Columbia that would decrease their benefits. The legislation would cut six weeks from state-funded unemployment benefits and 17 weeks from federally-funded aid. Overall, it'll decrease from 99 weeks to 76.
"We are not talking about that percentage who do not want to work. We're talking about working men and women," said Democratic State Representative Bill Clyburn of Aiken.
He saw the bill pass through the House. He says it hurts the unemployed but aims at helping small businesses through unemployment tax breaks.
It's part of Governor Nikki Haley's plan of paying back millions to the federal government after large amounts were borrowed during the recession.
"I think the governor is ready to sign. There's a lot of pressure in that office to support small business people," Clyburn said.
He notes that the economy has improved though, and he says both the unemployed and small businesses can be taken care of.
"I think funds ought to come from other areas, and we have that capability. We just need to make a decision on it," he said.
Back in Aiken, Scott is helping family members search for more work.
"Since I've been down here, I've taken a couple through Aiken Regional Hospital and through the stores here," he said.
He hopes they'll hear back from places like those, because he says they're ready to get back to work.
"It's not just unemployment for some poor areas or for people who are just looking for handouts," Scott said.
