Grace Kelly's jazz is a happy brand of jazz. It's unusual to see the 19-year-old without a charming dress, wearing a brightly colored hair band and a smile on her face. Her bright and present tone quality on her horn and lyrical voice still point to her lively, youthful personality. But what musician in her right mind wouldn't be happy if by the age of 19, she had performed with Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck and Harry Connick Jr. and recorded a CD with legendary saxophonist Phil Woods? An unknown of sorts last year (she has been the buzz in a lot of jazz circles since her first album at 12), Kelly is another of the Rochester-made artists coming out of the jazz fest. She returns this year as one of the top acts to catch. Besides her impressive club performances last June, she also fearlessly jumped up on the festival's late-night stage to jam with anyone and everyone, including festival producer John Nugent. Kelly was Nugent's find. They crossed paths a few years ago in Italy, while Kelly was playing at a jazz program (she was invited there by Lincoln Center pianist Antonio Ciacca). They talked and played. Nugent was impressed, which earned Kelly a spot on the festival roster and his recommendation for last year, which brought plenty of curious festival-goers out to her concerts.

"I missed certain things like prom and graduation," she says. "I don't think it was a monumental thing that I missed."

Currently, Kelly's been touring around music from her latest CD, the Man With the Hat , the one she recorded with 79-year-old veteran saxophonist Phil Woods. She holds her own next to Woods; passing off licks to and from each other, they both show off a sophisticated style of jazz. Another CD is in the process, her seventh, simply titled Grace . A record of spirituals and hymns she's arranged, it's a departure from the straight ahead jazz she's been playing. She's also recording demo tracks to be released independently that shift direction even further into a singer/songwriter, pop-influenced style. She cites a range of artists that she is drawing inspiration from, all the way from Stevie Wonder to Norah Jones and John Mayer. She'll bring that same all-female energy to Rochester for the jazz festival (even when there's a male in the mix).
