First, Cory Gardner sits as temporary speaker of the House of Representatives for the passage of the Ryan budget bill. Next, he announces his support for tax credits related to new natural gas development to help his constituents in Northern Colorado. Then, earlier this month, he announces his reconsideration of this issue. Finally on June 22, the House passed his first major piece of legislation to enable energy companies to drill in Alaska's Outer Continental Shelf.
As temporary speaker on the day the Ryan budget was passed, many of us saw Gardner wielding the gavel on cable television. Yes, sitting as the temporary speaker can be an honor. But holding this office on the day of history might prove to be something no one wants in his photo journal.
While some Republicans will dispute that this budget passage will be remembered as the first shot to eliminate Medicare, most Americans will not dispute that history will not be kind to Ryan or Gardner. As the 2012 presidential race unfolds, this vote will become a landmark with which few will want to be associated.

The ultra-conservative Koch brothers have extensive holdings in properties, which produce oil and have previously donated to Gardner's campaign. Their position is that anything that increases natural gas production could negatively impact our country's reliance on oil.
Some of us have trouble understanding how new tax credits for natural gas development impact our reliance on oil. But conservative Republicans have been warned not to tamper with any tax law that would cause higher tax rates for the richest of Americans. This message has come through to Gardner, and he has withdrawn his support of the bill he co-sponsored in April as "it now requires more study."
Someone ought to explain to our representative that the 4th Congressional District of Colorado is comprised of land that is subject to development for natural gas production. The Texas oil interests should have no impact on what is right for Colorado, even if this means giving up political contributions.
The House's passage of the Gardner Alaska energy bill might become the most significant bill associated with Gardner's first term in Congress. If passed by the Senate and signed by the president, it would make it easier for energy companies to drill in Alaska's Outer Continental Shelf.
