Gander: A new pigeon stool

As Mother Nature has her mood swings and sends pigeons awry, NAPA’s Charlie Martin said his pigeon problem has reached excremental proportions. “They’re nesting in the sign. Every morning there’s crap by the door, and all over the sign. It’s a mess.”

When The Beacon asked him how he thinks they got here, he replied, “I heard through the grapevine the Town brought them over.”

Bird enthusiast Kevin Butler of Gander said it’s nothing new. Pigeons have been here for awhile, and he suspects the military brought them over about 10 years ago. “There must be 15 to 20 pigeons in Gander now, and they’re multiplying. They’re tough birds. Migration patterns in birds teaches us a lot about climate change.”

Another theory could be that the pole changes in the earth are messing with the inner compass of birds. Pigeons homing instincts seem to be able to detect the earth’s magnetic fields. Cornell University pigeon researcher Dr. Charles Walcott says that magnetic sensitivity, along with an ability to tell direction by the sun, seems to help pigeons find their way home.

Migratory birds, as well as many other animals, are able to sense the magnetic field of the earth, but how do they do it? "A fascinating possibility is that they may actually see the earth's magnetic lines as patterns of color or light intensity superimposed on their visual surroundings," said John B. Phillips at Virginia Tech. He added that the earth's magnetic field is sensed by light-absorbing molecules in the retina of a birds' eye.

Since the earth is going through erratic polar shifts it is no wonder the migratory compass of birds is out of whack. A weakening of the magnetic field caused by cosmic rays has greatly increased. As a result, migratory birds have lost the ability to identify direction. Even more, changes in the earth’s crust will jumpstart frequent volcanic and more intense tectonic movements, earthquakes and landslides.

The poles are constantly shifting, and it’s affecting most things. Air traffic controllers have to change the coordinates of the runways because they still use the poles for direction instead of GPS. Recently aeronautical charts  have indicated that the North Pole is actually moving closer to top of the earth, and not toward the equator.

Much like humans, birds are learning to adapt to extreme changes in the atmosphere, and bird enthusiasts like Mr. Butler are fascinated to learn more when he participates in the Breeding Bird Survey put out by Environment Canada, National Wildlife Research Centre, and in the United States by the U.S. Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, where over 400 species of birds are recorded in Newfoundland every year.

Women who are pregnant tend to eat leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli since they are jam packed with essential goodness. The chlorophyll (green pigment) contained in these vegetables could be the one that mixes using the fecal matter, causing green bowel movement. In simple words, excess use of green veggies will change the stool color, and that is usually green.

Prenatal Vitamins Adding prenatal vitamins inside diet could also lead to defecation of green-black stools when pregnant. The are often recommended to make sure proper fetal development. Basically, they’re supplements that may contain greater number of essential minerals like calcium and iron in comparison with other vitamins. With the increased nutrient needs of the body while pregnant, a healthy diet alone might not exactly serve the purpose. Hence, a well balanced diet joined with intake of prenatal vitamins ensures sufficient availability of minerals and vitamins. The high iron content during these supplements means that stool appears greenish in color. Although, iron requirements rise because of increased volume of blood in pregnancy, there is a possibility that some level of supplemental iron probably won’t get absorbed. This malabsorption of iron prompts the entire body to eliminate iron salts during using the bathroom properly. As a result, the stools have an unusual color that is seen in shades of green.
