Sira-sira store: Why I like fish

THIS sounds like an English class project. Right after the Lenten break, Christmas break, summer break, without break, my grammar-perfect guru would scare the class: “Please get one whole sheet of paper—“

And we would interrupt: “One whole sheet of paper, ma’am?”

With a sigh, she would reply: “Yes, one whole sheet of paper. Please write down what you did during your vacation.” And every year, I would write the same report but worded in different ways.

Unfortunately, there were summers when all I did was watch television shows, stuff my mouth with potato chips and soda, but you couldn’t put that on paper. That would have meant only one line: “Last summer, all I did was watch TV shows and eat junk food.” Could you expect to get an A+ grade for that?

So this project takes me back to my younger days when English classes represented alchemy with nouns and verbs, sandbars with prepositions and gerunds; jail term if you committed five grammatical mistakes; and yes, theme-writing.

This is similar to a theme-writing exercise—actually, to be honest, for me a column is a serious type of theme writing because you expose your heart and brains—and I mean business.

My subject, as I was wont to tell my teacher at the start of the writing, is about why I like fish.

I know that my teacher would already give me a low score because I’m in the middle of the column already and yet the reader still has no idea why I like fish.

A thought balloon: “It’s OK. I’d take a 75 percent grade, ma’am. I’m trying to maintain all my grades at 75 percent. That’s really hard work, you know.”

Why do I like fish?

On top of my list is the fact that fish go in schools. They value education and try not to stray from the scholarly journey.

Any member of the school of fish that leaves the group becomes instant food for sharks that have the mind to take sex video photos.

I like fish because they have a healthy lifestyle. White fish prefer vegetable diet, I heard. Cod, sea bass, rock fish, groupers and what I particularly admire, isda sa bato or parrotfish—they’re all white fish.

These creatures have the singular goal to stay healthy. They teach us to make it a habit to eat something green and leafy every day, and to avoid saturated fat, high-sugar food, too much salt and even a sedentary life.

Have you ever found fish with pot-belly (and I don't mean puffer fish), or fish that died from a heart attack? Oh, they die in mass numbers only because of man's recklessness with fish pens and sudden changes in the weather. It's not their fault.

How to Keep Freshwater Pufferfish: Dwarf Puffers | Freshwater ...

Notes: Dwarf puffers are one of the few types of freshwater pufferfish that can successfully be kept with their own species. They are best kept in a species only tank, however, some do well with a cleaner tank mates, like otocinclus – some keepers even report their dwarf puffers cohabitating with different shrimp species. Since adult males can become very territorial with each other, it is recommended to keep a single male in a group of females – 1 male to 3-4 females is a widely accepted ratio. Dwarf puffer beaks do not grow at a fast rate, so you are less likely to have fish problems with an overgrown beak. However, you still need to offer dwarf puffers a varied diet that includes a large quantity of shelled foods to maintain dental health – baby pond snails and ramshorn snails are perfect for this. They do well in a planted tank, and they enjoy an interactive environment filled with driftwood caves and other hiding places.
