The operator reported fixing the problem, which it blamed on worn valve seats. The seats are made of special alloys hardened to withstand chafing from closing plugs. The company, though, acknowledged that their breakdown is a "normal occurrence.

My current car just got wrecked and am looking at a 1989 911 Silver Anniversary edition with about 100,000 miles on it. The owner says it burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles and a mechanic said it needed valve guides. I'm getting a PPI done later this week but for a 100k mile 3.2 with worn valve guides, would a total engine build be a better option? Better to pass on the car? The car drove fine, no smoke but it felt a little gutless compared to my Boxster S. As has been noted, valve guides are the other common wear item at that mileage, most people would go for a top end rebuild, but if it was me I would spend the extra and check out the bottom end. Very unlikely to be worn, but new bearing shells and seals would be a wise investment. IMO. As has been said, check out impactbumpers.
