Australian tour boat abandons US snorkeler on Great Barrier Reef

"Panic kicks in, your heart rate goes up, and you don't know what's going to happen. I was sucking water back into my snorkel and was really trying hard to stay calm," Cole told the Sydney Morning Herald . ''When I got to the other boat they looked down like 'what the hell are you doing here?' They said my boat had left 15 minutes ago. I thought they were joking.''

But a representative of marine park tourism operators told the Herald that Cole was "making a mountain out of a molehill," dismissing his ordeal as no worse than "being left behind at a beach."

The dive boat staff member who missed Cole by failing to properly perform an end-of-trip headcount has reportedly been sacked, the Herald says. After the Lonergan incident, Australian dive operators tightened their safety standards. But, notes the Associated Press, "a handful of reef tourists have found themselves adrift since then. In 2008, a British diver and his American girlfriend became lost when they resurfaced from a dive on the reef and found themselves far away from their dive boat. A helicopter rescued them after they spent 19 hours in the ocean."

As a longtime diver and snorkeler who was certified on the Great Barrier Reef, I can imagine the panic of raising my head to find my dive boat nowhere in sight. But as I reported in 2004 when Open Water's gruesome tale of abandoned divers being killed by sharks was making waves, such incidents are reassuringly rare.

Some tips for ensuring you always make it back to shore:

Choose a dive operator and dive site wisely. Whether you opt for an often-maligned "cattle boat" carrying a dozen or more divers or a "six-pack" boat with six close friends, do your homework on the operator's qualifications and longevity; many divers post reports on sites like ScubaDiving.com. What's more, "you have to be honest about your own abilities" and local conditions, says Undercurrent 's Ben Davison.

Ask about safety plans. Reputable operators will have established (and redundant) procedures for counting divers and calling them back to the boat in an emergency.

Pay attention to the dive briefing.
