Always on: Protect yourself from malware on the Mac

At the same time, security experts have been warning Mac users that no computer system is immune to attack. Your dark day will come, they were told.

And that day appears to have arrived. Malware that tricks Mac users into installing it, then demanding credit card information to fix nonexistent problems, has invaded the previously placid Mac ecosystem. It is almost identical to rogue antispyware that has been the bane of Windows users for some time.

The program, MacDefender, uses social engineering — a fancy way of saying "deceit" - to scare users into thinking they've got malware on their Macs. MacDefender purports to fix it, but in reality it spyware. When installed, it demands payment to clean up your system. It's actually a ploy to get you to enter credit card numbers - in some cases, multiple numbers, as each card you enter is rejected.

The earliest version of MacDefender required users to enter their Mac's administrator password, which is a Mac OS X security feature. But users granted permission because they thought the program would fix their machines. New versions of MacDefender don't require a password, and depending on settings in Apple's Safari browser, may launch the installer automatically.

Last week, Apple responded by releasing a security update, but only for the very latest version of the Mac OS, dubbed Snow Leopard. If you've got Leopard or the even older Tiger flavors of OS X, you're on your own. The update protects against MacDefender, and enables a Mac to download and install updated malware definitions on a daily basis, providing users with some protection against evolving threats.

And they are evolving. Less than a day after the update was released, a new MacDefender was in the wild that got around them. Apple again updated its protection, and the bad guys responded with another new variant of their malware. Windows users reading this are likely nodding their heads in recognition; it's a familiar scenario for them.

I've been writing quite a bit about this in my blog (see blog.chron.com/techblog/tag/mac-defender/ ), and the reactions to those items have been interesting. Some Mac users get it, understanding that they now must pay closer attention to security. But others remain in denial, convinced that, because MacDefender isn't a traditional "virus" and requires user action to install it, the Macpocalypse isn't really upon us. And while the straits aren't completely dire, I'd suggest that it is time for Mac users to come out of their security slumber.
