Volvo's iconic 850 celebrates its 20th birthday

Volvo’s ‘boxy but good’ 850 model celebrates its 20th birthday this month and to mark the occasion Volvo has issued a press release reminding us how innovative and important this model really was.

In 1990 the 850 was developed with some genuine world firsts in a production vehicle like having its gearbox fitted alongside the engine and using a new type of multilink axle called the Delta Link. Naturally there was some new safety tech as well; a side impact protection system SIPS was rolled out and height-adjustable safety belts were also included.

The 850 went on to be more than just a popular family hauler and by 1994 was entered into the British Touring Car Championship in station wagon form. When the rules changed in ’95 and ’96 the Swedish company reverted to a sedan model and won 13 races and finished third in the championship both years. But it would be the racing wagon or ‘flying brick’ that has gone on to become a motorsport icon.

Volvo’s 850, launched 20 years ago this month came with four world firsts for the motor industry – one at the front, one at the rear and two in the middle.

The Volvo 850 actually carried over nothing at all from previous Volvo models apart from its name. It represented a total departure from its predecessors and the other models in the range in virtually every respect. From the newly developed and modularly constructed all-aluminium engine range – whose first result was the 3-litre in-line six that was fitted to the Volvo 960 in late summer 1990 – a five-cylinder 170 hp variant was created.

It was installed transversely in the new car, in a separate sub-frame, and drove the front wheels via an unusually compact gearbox fitted alongside the engine. This was world-first number one.

The rear suspension was attached to a new type of multilink axle called the Delta Link, which cleverly combined the comfort and pliant ride of independent suspension with the live rear axle’s stability and constant track. World-first number two.

Safety was naturally a high-priority area and the Volvo 850 took a giant step forward in this respect, not least thanks to the two world-firsts in the middle of the car: the integrated SIPS side-impact protection system and the ARH automatic height-adjustable safety belt mechanism.

Right now my Labor (EB3-I) and 140 are approved. I filed 485 in July-07. They have just initiated EB-2 labor from the same company (very small entity). Assuming labor gets through, when we are ready to file for 140, they can ask for PD transfer. So if everything goes according to the plan, and 140 gets approved, it would come with EB-3 priority date. I am not sure if Ottawa is any easy. I have been trying to get one in Ottawa since last couple of days but not luck. If fact, I have having no luck with all 4 east coast consulates (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Quebec City) in Canada. I wonder if calling them would help but the online site says that the consulates also rely upon that same online system so if I don't see it online, consulate can't really do much. I wonder if that's true. (September 21): The Senate is debating H.R. 6061 today, the Secure Fence Act of 2006, although other business will be conducted as well. According to media reports, a vote has been scheduled to proceed to the bill later today. The timing is uncertain. Democrats are demanding that amendments be voted on, like the one offered by Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) that would add an AGJOB-like amnesty for agricultural workers. So far, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) is resisting. Frist can preclude such amendments from being offered, or limit them, if he can keep a majority of his Republican colleagues in line. The bill cannot be filibustered because members voted to limit debate on the measure. Also today, the House passed three enforcement bills that are important to the �attrition through enforcement� immigration reduction strategy. H.R. 6095, which would clarify state and local law enforcement�s inherent authority to enforce Federal immigration laws and overturn a decades-old court injunction that impedes the Federal government�s ability to remove aliens from El Salvador on an expedited basis, passed by a vote of 277-140. H.R. 6094 -- a bill that would provide for the detention of dangerous aliens, the removal of deportable criminal aliens, and the inadmissibility and deportability of aliens participating in street gang activity � passed by a 328-95 vote. And H.R. 4830, which would create explicit penalties for construction and/or use of a border tunnel, passed by a 422-0 vote. Also first make your parents believe that, they will get visa, and not to be tensed. Parents make dump mistakes when tensed. Let them be who they are.
