Madison (Press Release) - Severe storms moved across southern and eastern Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon and evening with heavy rain, wind and flooding across the area. Rain totals from the National Weather Service (NWS) include:
Milwaukee 3-3.5" Madison 1-1.3" Oconto County 3.5" Marinette County 3" Shawano County 2.7" Forest County 2.5" Berlin 2.4" Portage 2.4"A flood warning remains for the Kickapoo River in Crawford County. In addition, The Wisconsin River at Portage is above bankfull this morning. The NWS expects the river will rise but will not reach flood stage.
Waukesha County - Waukesha County officials reported straight line wind speeds over 100 miles an hour downing trees and power lines. The towns of Eagle, Nashotah, Summit and Dousman were hit hardest by the wind. At 6am Wednesday, 27,000 We Energies customers had their power restored; about 7,000 still have no power. Waukesha County total estimated private sector damage: $302,454.
Milwaukee County - In Milwaukee and nearby communities flash flooding caused minor basement backups and ponding on city streets. The city received hundreds of calls from residents with sewer back-ups and water in basement. Some specifics:
At approximately 800PM 3-4 inches of water had accumulated on the roadways near the Zoo Interchange and in the construction area of the Mitchell Interchange and Airport Spur. City of Milwaukee reported that their 286-City Hotline received hundreds of calls (127 for sewer backup/water in the basement and 277 for clogged basins causing street flooding). Two feet of water was reported on Miller Parkway/So. 43rd St. near Miller Park. Sewer manhole covers were reported overflowing at 43rd St and W. Lincoln Ave. and N. Port Washington Rd. and Capital Drive. City of Milwaukee DPW reported they barricaded flooded underpasses on W. Capital Drive between 31st and 35th Streets, Townsend St. between N. 30th and N. 35th Street. The roadway was reported flooded at Mayfair Rd. and Bluemound Road in Wauwatosa. Lightning strikes cause power outages (transformer hit and lines down from pole that split) in West Allis (near Hwy 100 and W. Lincoln Ave.). MMSD report combined sewer system overflows were released in local rivers and Lake Michigan. The National Weather Service says those conditions weren't typical. Meteorologist Marcia Cronce says most areas across Milwaukee, Ozaukee and Waukesha counties got about half an inch of rain. She says rain is expected to linger until noon.
